Health hazards behind the summer crayfish feast: Understanding rhabdomyolysis

Dear friends, on a summer night, invite three to five friends to taste a delicious and spicy crayfish, paired with a refreshing beer. This is truly delightful. However, while enjoying this delicious food, everyone should also be alert to possible health issues - rhabdomyolysis.
In recent years, cases of rhabdomyolysis caused by consuming crayfish have attracted widespread attention. So, what is rhabdomyolysis?
Rhabdomyolysis is a disease caused by severe damage to muscle tissue. Rhabdoid muscle is the skeletal muscle attached to the bones and the myocardium that makes up the heart. It is named after its muscle fibers and appears as bright and dark stripes under a microscope. Generally speaking, patients with rhabdomyolysis will experience significant muscle pain, fatigue, and darkened urine color. In severe cases, acute kidney injury, arrhythmia, and even life-threatening situations may occur.
Why does crayfish cause rhabdomyolysis? The exact reason is currently unclear, but it may be related to the following factors.
Firstly, crayfish live underwater for a long time and have complex food sources. They may carry a large number of bacteria and toxic substances in their bodies, such as lung flukes. These biotoxins may be one of the factors that trigger rhabdomyolysis. In addition, it is difficult to completely remove these harmful substances in daily household cleaning. If not handled properly and not fully cooked during the cooking process, it may result in residual biotoxins in crayfish, leading to rhabdomyolysis.
Secondly, certain bacteria carried by crayfish, such as Salmonella and Staphylococcus aureus, may also become the "culprits" causing rhabdomyolysis if they exceed the standard.
Thirdly, if crayfish aquaculture waters contain heavy metal ions or residues of veterinary antibiotics, these substances may accumulate in the head and gills of crayfish, and excessive intake may also be related to rhabdomyolysis.
Fourthly, the protein content in crayfish may trigger allergic reactions in certain populations, which may include asthma, shock, or secondary rhabdomyolysis.
